19th Century Dutch Silver Snuff Box

By the 19th century, the consumption of snuff had become popular among the elites of society, from Napoleon to British Queen Charlotte, who was sometimes referred to as “snuffy Charlotte,” and who kept a room at Windsor Castle solely to store her collection. It is no wonder that elaborate boxes were made in precious and semi-precious materials, such as silver, for these VIPs.
This silver snuff box was heavily decorated in repousse depicting figures including a cherub, as well as flowers and classical designs. The central vignette is of a man and a woman with the cherub nearby. Its small size was practical for having a day or two’s amount of snuff on one’s person.
The rim is embossed with flowers around a scrolling design. The bottom of the box is heavily repousséd with both scrolls and flowers. The top lifts up by virtue of a long hinge.
The 19th century Dutch silver mark is embossed onto the base on the outside.
It is in very good condition for its age and type. The hinge works well and it closes tightly. There is some wear to the figures, otherwise the designs are prominent. It has developed a fine patina and a lovely, soft silver color. It certainly is a fine, pretty and charming example that would enhance any snuff box collection.
It measures about 2-¼ inches wide, 1-5/8 inches deep and 1-1/8 inches high.
